Racket sports are associated with the development of “tennis elbow”, a term sometimes used to describe pain anywhere in the general area of the elbow. For instance, the three main areas of tennis elbow pain are the outside, the inside and the back of the elbow. Rheumatoid arthritis of the elbow

Rheumatoid arthritis of the elbow is a chronic disease causing inflammation of the elbow joint tissue that lines and lubricates the joint. As the joint lining swells, the joint space narrows. The disease gradually destroys the bones and soft tissues.

Rheumatoid arthritis is the most common cause of elbow arthritis. It is more common that osteoarthritis. However, by comparison to other joints in the body, the elbow has a low incidence of arthritis.

Rheumatoid arthritis usually affects both elbows at the same time.

Osteoarthritis of the elbow

Osteoarthritis affects the protective cartilage between the bone joints that enables smooth movement of the joint. As the cartilage is worn away, the bones begin to rub against each other causing elbow pain. Loose fragments within the joint may accelerate degeneration. A previous injury to the elbow can damage joint cartilage and lead to the development of arthritis.

Normally, healthy cartilage is a slick, glistening smooth white tissue that acts as a bearing surface for joints to move freely. When the cartilage is damaged through wear and tear or trauma, the surface becomes rough and no longer glides. This causes pain and stiffness within the joint.

Symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis of the elbow

The onset of rheumatoid arthritis symptoms is usually gradual even though it can begin suddenly. Unlike osteoarthritis where pain is generally constant, rheumatoid arthritis symptoms appear and then fade away. Flare-ups will be followed by symptom-free periods when pain is nearly gone. RA symptoms or signs are as follows:

  1. Pain and tenderness in nearly all inflamed joints, aggravated even more when the forearm is rotated.
  2. Swelling around the affected joints.
  3. Pain usually appears first in smaller joints of the body, such as fingers and toes before the elbows are affected.
  4. If a joint on one side of the body is affected, the same joint on the other side will be affected simultaneously. For example, both elbows, both wrists, both hands, both feet.
  5. Pain can occur in any joint of the body, even the neck.
  6. A low-grade fever may be present
  7. Stiffness that lasts 45 minutes or longer when getting up
  8. Fatigue – feeling tired
  9. Not feeling well, especially in the early afternoon
  10. Changes in appearance of affected joints
  11. Appearance of painless small lumps under the skin near the pressure points, such as the feet, hands and elbows. These nodules range from the size of an aspirin tablet to as large as a peach seed.
  12. Insomnia or difficulty sleeping due to pain.

There more than 100 types of arthritis that affect the joints and connective tissues (tendons and ligaments) of the body. Only a medical doctor can diagnose arthritis.

If you are experiencing elbow pain or any others of the above symptoms you should see your doctor by appointment. If arthritis of any kind is suspected, you’ll be referred to a rheumatologist, a specialist who is trained to recognize and treat rheumatoid arthritis, as well as other kinds of arthritis.

Symptoms of osteoarthritis of the elbow

Osteoarthritis symptoms of the elbow include:

  1. Elbow Pain that grows stronger as the arm is extended.
  2. Pain continuing at night or when at rest indicates a more advanced stage of osteoarthritis.
  3. Joint instability making difficult routine daily activity.
  4. Inability to extend (straighten) the arm or flex (bend) the elbow.
  5. Inability to fully rotate the wrist due to elbow pain or impeded movement.
  6. A feeling of locking or catching within the elbow joint during movement.
  7. Stiffness. While this is a general symptom, it happens particularly with arthritis that develops after an injury.

Prevention, treatment for rheumatoid elbow arthritis

There is no cure for arthritis. If you have rheumatoid arthritis, a rheumatologist will optimize the medications to control the condition. In some instances of RA, NSAIDs may be prescribed at first to relieve elbow pain and inflammation. However, depending upon the assessment of the disease, a more aggressive drug approach may be necessary.

This makes it important that the diagnosis of RA be made as early as possible as disease progression is a determining factor in guiding therapeutic decisions.

In addition to management of the disease with medications, several other approaches are possible:

  1. Assistive devices (braces, splints, etc.)
  2. Diet (limit alcohol consumption, control your weight, eat a healthy diet)
  3. Apply cold to joints or painful areas for occasional flare-ups
  4. Apply head to joints or painful areas (15-minute hot shower, heating pad, etc)
  5. Avoid straining joints affected by arthritis
  6. Avoid tasks or activities that require repetitive motion, heavy lifting or stress on the affected joints
  7. Avoid stress and anxiety
  8. Develop a support system
  9. Get enough rest
  10. . Do not smoke
  11. Keep a positive attitude
  12. Know your limits
  13. Know your symptoms
  14. Keep active in life.

Prevention, treatment for osteoarthritis of the elbow

If you have osteoarthritis of the elbow, initial treatment is more likely to consist of NSAIDs, such as over-the-counter (OTC) or prescription painkillers. All drugs have side effects. Anti-inflammatory drugs commonly cause stomach discomfort, nausea, bleeding, and other side effects.

You may prefer an alternative natural treatment for elbow pain rather than worry about stomach bleeding or the potential for gastrointestinal and other side effects long term. Prevention, treatment for tennis elbow

Tennis elbow is not arthritis—it’s a typical elbow pain condition. Additional suggestions for pain prevention of tennis elbow:

  1. Use an elastic elbow sleeve to help keep your elbow warm during activity
  2. Wear an elbow band on the upper forearm to prevent further injury and reduce pain
  3. Spend less time doing the activity that causes the pain.
  4. Stretch out your forearm before, during and after the activity.
  5. Use ice after the activity to reduce elbow pain and swelling if your pain is due to past elbow injury.
  6. Use an over the counter NSAID, such as ibuprofen or better yet a natural anti-inflammatory for pain and swelling control
  7. Use the correct grip size for your racket and don’t string the racket too tight

What’s the difference between typical drug treatments and natural pain relief products?

All drugs relieve elbow pain at the expense of side effects (even those purchased over the counter).

McClellan, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) commissioner, said in the announcement, in which he estimated that 1,000 domestic and foreign companies make supplements sold here. "Millions of Americans use dietary supplements every day, and we need to make sure they're getting the products they pay for."

This announcement was made in July, 2007 at which time the final rule was announced for the current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMPs) regulations for the dietary supplement industry. The cGMPs requires manufacturers to test the purity and composition of their products.

Small dietary supplement companies remain unregulated

Large companies with 500 or more employees had to comply by June, 2008. Small companies with 499 employees or less, by June, 2009, while very small companies with less than 20 employees in June, 2010 to comply with the new rules. At the present time very small companies remain unregulated, which is the bulk of the industry.

The FDA said the cGMPs is their response to dietary supplement quality problems. The FDA has received tens of thousands of dietary supplement-related voluntary adverse event reports since 1994.

Many of these were related to misbranding or adulteration (preparing for sale by replacing more valuable with less valuable or inert ingredients). Many others were because of bacteria, glass, pesticides, lead and other heavy metal contamination.

However, unlike pharmaceutical drugs, the cGMPs do not require dietary supplement manufacturers to do pre-market testing of their products. Therefore, proof of efficacy is not required. To be able to market a supplement, the FDA does not require clinical studies to prove a product works. A letter from the manufacturer stating the supplement's purpose is all that is necessary.

Who can you trust as a natural dietary supplement company?

So when you’re considering the latest dietary supplement wonder-product for “arthritis cures” (there's no scientifically-recognized arthritis cure), for example, or simply for elbow pain relief, how do you find out whether what’s in the bottle is safe to take? How do you find out whether science has proven that the product does what it claims? The government isn't going to help you on this one.
