Antioxidant Polyphenols Protect Cells Against Damage

Polyphenols are chemical substances found in plants that may protect against some common health problems including joint arthritis and certain effects of aging. They act as antioxidants and therefore safeguard cells against damage caused by tissue-damaging free radicals in the body.

A polyphenol is also classified by the type and number of phenolic subcomponents present. More than one subcomponent can be present on a given polyphenol.

Resveratrol is a phenolic compound found in highest concentration in the skins of grapes. Both red and white wine grape varieties have resveratrol but red wines will normally have 10 times more resveratrol than white wines.

Additionally, different red grape varieties are prone to differing resveratrol levels with the large muscadine grape (known as a super grape) having highest levels.

In the late 20th century, interest in the possible health benefits of resveratrol in wine was spurred by discussion of the French Paradox, which is the observation involving the health of wine drinkers in France who suffer a relatively low incidence of coronary heart disease despite having a diet relatively rich in saturated fats.

Anti aging research published in the journal Nature in October, 2006 showed resveratrol had life-extending activity in laboratory mice. This led to the development of a landmark cellular anti aging supplement.
